Ignite your culinary passion with cookin class adventures.

Tempe, Ariz. (September 2003)-- In an effort to encourage families to eat together more, enjoy more healthful meals and make cooking experiences more successful and fun, SunWest Appliance Distributing in Tempe is launching an exciting new series of cooking class adventures, Cooking with Viking, beginning October 2, 2003.

Led by resident chef, Amy Ahrensdorf, a graduate of the Art Institute of Phoenix culinary program, many of the classes are hands-on and will be offered in SunWest's state-of-the-art kitchen, located at 8370 South Kyrene Road in Tempe. "I am excited about this new series of classes that we've developed to meet the needs of every day meal preparation in our busy, time-compressed world," commented Ahrensdorf. "We found that typical cooking classes in the valley only teach a select number of recipes, whereas our classes will teach basic kitchen philosophy and help the family cook get back in the kitchen and overcome the barriers to cooking," she added.

"I found an interesting extensive study done of National Merit Scholars to find the common denominator in these bright kids' upbringing. According to Jay Walljasper in "The Joy of Eating," it turns out the common denominator was not household income, private schools, parents' education level or wealthy neighborhoods. It was families who ate their meal together. Just that simple statement prompted us to want to help families get back to the dinner table," Ahrensdorf said.

Seven different courses are being offered, ranging in cost from $45 for the demonstration courses to $79 for the hands-on courses. Hands-on course attendees will each receive a free Viking apron.Every course teaches essential skills and techniques attendees can use every day. The courses include:
- Dinner in 30 Minutes
- Asian Fusion
- Basic Cooking Skills
- How To Be Your Own Personal Chef
- Hot Tips, Cool Products
- How To Host a Cooking Party
- Holiday Goodies

The courses will be repeated through the fall and winter. A full calendar, course descriptions and costs are available from SunWest by calling 480.784.6611. Class size is strictly limited, so preregistration is required.
