The Madison Hotel Welcomes World War II Wartime Cooking Expert Joanne Lamb Hayes

May 26, 2004 -- The Madison Hotel will welcome World War II wartime cooking expert Joanne Lamb Hayes to The Federalist restaurant for a special dinner, "Cooking from the Victory Garden." Hayes is the author of two recent books that recall World War II and the way America cooked during that era: "Grandma's Wartime Kitchen" and "Grandma's Wartime Baking Book." The dinner will be held at The Federalist restaurant in The Madison Hotel on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. Wine is included, and the cost is $45 per person, plus tax and gratuity. The menu is as follows:

Passed hors d'oeuvres:
Corned Beef Puffs, Cheese Custard with Chives, Corn Fritters
Ravenswood Chardonnay and Merlot

Adirondack Chowder
Grapefruit and Watercress Salad
Honey Whole Wheat Rolls, Squash Biscuits, "Butterless Butter"
Six Layer Dinner
War Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream
Coffee and Tea Service
Cookie Plate

The event is being held in conjunction with Washington, D.C.'s summer-long celebration called, "America Celebrates the Greatest Generation," in tribute to the WWII generation and the recently opened World War II Memorial. Joanne Lamb Hayes has won praise for her wartime cookbooks from a variety of sources nationwide, including being named one of the top ten cookbooks of the year by People magazine.

Award-winning author and scholar Marion Nestle says, "Grandma's Wartime Kitchen is much more than a nostalgic cookbook. It is a cultural history that takes us right back to 1941-45 when home cooks—many of them interviewed here—supported the war effort while feeding their families. Joanne Hayes has unearthed perfectly marvelous recipes…that show how women made do—and then some—with the scarcities of food rationing."

The Madison Hotel has preserved the charm and dignity of early 19th Century America, thus a stay at The Madison is a unique experience in living in two worlds – the world of today and the world of James and Dolley Madison. The Madison Hotel is located at the corner of 15th and M Streets, NW, in Washington, D.C.
