Antique Engagement Ring Foretells Murder in Steel City
PITTSBURGH, PA June 9, 2004--Inspired by a lifelong fascination with all things mysterious, as well as an appreciation for a good, old-fashioned ghost story, Pittsburgh author Sandy Henry has cooked up a stew that's three parts mainstream mystery and one part paranormal thriller. "I wanted to write a traditional mystery with just a hint of the supernatural. Those are the kinds of stories that I reach for on the bookshelf."
Henry's novel, her first, is Something Borrowed, Something Blue, which tells the story of Abby Duncan, a commitment phobic bride-to-be who is drawn to a vintage aquamarine solitaire engagement ring. Upon her engagement, she begins to experience vivid, haunting dreams. First, Abby sees a terrified young woman, Colleen McCurry, hiding from an intruder in her home. Then she discovers that the intruder had been sent to the house. And later, through her nightmares, Abby witnesses the murder of the young woman, on whose finger shines a pale blue heirloom ring set in rich, white platinum.
With the ring on her finger and a driving desire to uncover the details of a homicide believed by all to be a botched burglary, Abby begins to piece together a sinister conspiracy. And soon, her own life is in jeopardy when, like Colleen, Abby gets in the way of the killer's evil plot.
"If you love mysteries, you will fall right into Sandy Henry's inaugural book, Something Borrowed, Something Blue. Her easy style takes you through a myriad of twists and turns. You won't want to put this book down. We're waiting for her next one. . ." --Jan Bachman, Devenish Press, Boulder, CO
Los Angeles screenwriter Mike Buzzelli says, "Something Borrowed, Something Blue is an original new suspense novel woven with a quirky charm. It's a light, breezy book that's a real pleasure to read. I bet you won't be able to put it down."
"I was hoping to weave a mystery that is unpredictable and entertaining—the kind of read to keep you company for a day by the pool or an airplane commute." The author chose to set her story in her native western Pennsylvania. "I'm proud to call Pittsburgh my hometown, and I wanted to share the elements that make it such an interesting place to live and work. I know that many new authors set their stories on their own home turf. But I just couldn't resist giving readers a taste of Steel City hospitality—along with a murder or two."
"I also wanted to give the book those quirky little details and observations that make a story fun and rich. Too many mysteries seem to offer ‘just the facts,' and that takes away the challenge of trying to put all the pieces together. I like to be taken along on a thrill ride, sure. But I don't mind learning that the heroine had a big fluffy dog as a kid or that her favorite food is pine nut-crusted salmon with champagne cream sauce. Not every detail is an important clue."
Sandy Henry is the published author of various essays, articles and reviews, as well as an optioned screenwriter.
This summer, her humor essay, Fearing, Facing and (Finally!) Embracing Forty will be published in an anthology by best-selling author Yitta Halberstam (Small Miracles, Changing Course). Henry lives with her husband Bill and two Labrador Retrievers in Pittsburgh, where she has just completed her own anthology of short stories and is working on a second thriller entitled My Bonny Lies.
